YOYO’S NOTTHING HILL ARTS CLUB REVIEW ASH CATCH’EM
2 Friday June 17 2011 Written by flyprintsFollow me on Twitter and Facebook
You’re only young once mate, something I hear alot from friends and indeed YOYOs take this mantra seriously. Ran by Leo Greenslade and Seb Chew YOYOs is one of London’s premier nights attracting the best in musical talent from around the world. Last night (16th june 2011) Joleon Davenue and Ash Catch’em performed, with a special guest DJ set from the legendary, QTIP.
After getting kicked out of YOYO’s at the last event. Me and @jeffflyprints were abit apprehensive about going back to the venue. Needless to say we arrived at 8.45pm (early, I know) as it can be notoriously difficult to get in and once inside I had a intellectual conversation with Kookie (unsigned artist) about the ugly nature of the music industry.
JOLEON DAVENUE
First to perform was Joleon Davenue, he performed several tracks off his new Mixtape “The New Mantra”. I really liked the track ‘Drum it out’, the base in the venue was immense. Joleon’s rap music is a blend of neo soul and r&b. I thought his crowd participation could have been more creative but all in all I enjoyed his flow.
“6th foot nothing with a mind that’s silly like a ill hill Billy”

ASH CATCH’EM
The head lining act was Ash Catch’em, he performed several tracks off his mix tape ‘Stouts and silvers’. What I liked about Ash’s music was the use of real instruments in the production and the old school rap sound. For me, the Saxophonist, Piers Haynes was at the focal point of the music. I could hear the Jay z and Rick Ross influence , listen to ‘Red light district music’. Ash’s word play wasn’t bad either. My favourite tracks was ‘9 to 5’

QTIP
So at some point during the performances the number of people in the venue literally quadrupled, the line outside was crazy. Split up into 3 sections the first section closest to the door had a waiting time of 20mins, the second section was 1hour and the third was “you might as well start a camp fire to keep warm”. Enter QTIP and Mark Ronson. I know some ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ fans are going to hunt me down and burn me but, to be honest I weren’t really feeling Qtips set. How can you start with Chamilionaire’s ‘riding dirty’… really!?He did redeem himself though with some old school tunes,(this is why @jeffflyprints was there).
All in all this event was good. The next event is on the 30th of June and headlining is Shades the Misfit.
