WIMBLEDON 2011- WHY CANT WE WIN?!

Summer is upon us and with it comes constant ramblings from people about getting fit (Someone should let them know it’s too late. By the time they get a six pack they’ll have to hide it in winter.), festivals, rain and yes you guessed it Wimbledon. Every year we are forced to endure endless media coverage asking us to get behind the next British wannabe victor only for them to crash and burn under the pressure before the competition really gets going. When it comes to sport we have a history of assuming victory is owed to us just because of a loose connection to anything which was apparently invented by the British. Remember the crushing defeat in the world cup last year?
My earliest memories of Wimbledon include talking about strawberries and cream and this diet coke advert.
I didn’t play tennis nor did I enjoy watching it- the scoring system was far to complicated for me. But all that changed when the power houses that are Venus and Serena Williams stepped on the scene. Now I understand why people camp outside for days just to get front row seats to see balls bounce off grass. I love Serena’s attitude after a long absence due to injury she came back and beat everyone all over again. Although the former world number one is currently ranked 25th when she was asked how it feels to be the bookies favourite she simply replied “I wouldn’t bet against me” Wow you’ve got to admire that level of confidence. What a woman. I hate that both her and her sister seem to get a lot of media coverage over what they wear and the state of their nails/ weave. When you care too much about how tennis players look you get Anna Kournikova and not much tennis.
They are excellent athletes and are living proof perseverance, determination, skill and hard work gets you closer to what you want in life. I also have to mention Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer who are so good at what they do they manage to make tennis exciting to watch even for a novice like me.
Glastonbury
Speaking of hardworking women Beyonce gave a great performance at Glastonbury this week. I’m no Stan but you have to give credit when it’s due. Here are a few of my personal favourites from the extensive BBC coverage (Of course I wasn’t there did you see the mud? Ewww)
Elbow- The lead singer of this band can really sing
Two door cinema- The sound of summer
Friendly fires- They always look like they’re having so much fun.
Big Boi-Missed Andre 3000 but I loved his last album
Janelle Monae very entertaining if not a little bit strange
Coldplay- I was feeling it
