THE AIR JORDAN FAD

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook

Of recent I have noticed the new craze of Air Jordan kicks EVERYWHERE! You’re cool or “Dope” if you have a pair of J’s on your feet…. some Tumblr’s and blogs of cool dudes and chicks in Jordan’s, his& her Jordan pictures…..and….blah blah blah pics of more I think I’m so cool pics..*sigh*.

The question is…..will this last!? Is this simply a FAD… bearing in mind that this is no cheap fashion item, the XO man’s song “follow fashion” comes to mind. In our society there are the people that get inspired, then the ones who inspire others and then the unfortunate suckers following trends. To be quite frank I don’t know how to embrace it….In fact I feel it’s a mockery and exploiting the Jordan lovers who see it as a hobby…..but yet again that’s like most fashion fads that is brought to the attention to the masses..Typical!

[JORDAN V WOLF GREY]

A close friend of mine who is a MAJOR Jordan fanatic…..Kinda like a floor to ceiling effect of Jordan boxes in his bedroom, he schooled me on the Air Jordan hobby form the various Jordan types, the edition and the understanding of the releases .I loved the air 3’s then decided to get a pair last year, not knowing what was in store to be next year’s Air Jordan craze. The Air Jordan culture is definite a phenomenal piece of the sneaker history, the arrival of Michael Jordan’s endorsed Michael Air Jordan’s in 1985 changed everything with distinctive features of the bold red and black colour scheme.

My final thought on the “Jordan phase” is there are a lot of Robot followers and no inventers….and why that is!?…Is it fear!?….It’s not cool to conform, get creative and be inspired!!

Good post. People wearing jordans and bragging about it all the time is annoying. You will find these are often the ones who have jumped on the bandwagon. Lots of them wearing jordan brand or fusions and still shouting u don't know about my jordans are confused. And they are ment to be self proclaimed 'sneaker heads' because try have a pair of 'Jordans' when in infect 9 times out of 10 a Jordan head wouldn't touch these hybrids or fusions or Jordan brand.
I wouldn't say the Jordan thing is a 'fad' as such. They have been in fashion and had a big following since like 1984. But there is a bunch of new wave people over hyping and making a big scene about something they know very little about. Just because it has a Jordan logo on it. Does not make it a air Jordan shoe. I would put money on it that at least 40% of people now couldn't tell you what teams Jordan played for.

looool.I hear that personally I not a huge sneaker head but off recent i've wanted to get a pair of jordans. The only thing stopping me is the little voice in my head "your gonna be one of those copy cats" and i wanna be special! lol isint that what everyone wants? it's interesting you talk about these fusion crepes, i didnt know about these could you tell me which ones are fused and i take it you wouldnt wear a pair?

If you like them. Get them. Nothing wrong with getting why you like man. I know what u mean though about being just one of the many now. But f it if u like them for what they are get them. Personally I played bball from the age of 12 for about 12 years. I was into the sport since about 9 so always had basketball trainers. Not just jordans. Had shaq's kobes, shawn kemps, pippen, iverson, even rodman signiture shoes. Allong with all the other pairs of boots I had. (remember my mum cussin about £100 for trainers etc when I was a kid) but now I don't play ball I just buy to wear. And most these re issue jordans. I used to have first time round. Or missed out when I was younger because they came before my time. So now I just get some of I like them. I have thought ah I don't want to wear these today because I know I will see somone with them on. But then I think fuck it. I like em and have done so I'll wear. I don't really worry about what people think too much.
Fusions. Well all the ones that are mixed with air forces are fusions. To be honest. Some of them are ok looking too me. And I have 2 pairs. But I use them as my everyday trainers. Might go park and kick a ball in them or whatever. But personal taste I think 80% are horrible. But again if you like them. Get them. Nothing wrong with it. Just don't be one of those heads on twitter hyping about some exclusive jordans that are a not exclusive and b not technically jordans.
Just do what you want man really. I remember when I was in school and everyone used to clown me and few bball friends about wearing space boots cos we didn't have air max's etc but now the same people are buying retro jordans.

Yeah in North America every kid has a pair of Jordans. I bought my first pair two years ago when I started getting into Spike Lee's films but I'm surprised as to how late people have jumped on it over here. Jordans have been reknowned as a fashion statement for years yet only recently people are hyping, or that seems to be the case.

First pair were I copped were the 1s Do The Right Thing Limited editions and the second were the 60+ which were basically the 5s with the best colourways. I'm not a self-proclaimed Jordan freak, don't really like the 3s, I think some of the air flights are sick and the 5s are one of the best shoes out there. Spiz'ikes are sick too but only cause spike lee designs them ha.

To be fair I can't say I've massively noticed the Jordan hype, in my eyes they've always been around.

Not in the UK, In the UK Urban market(who jordans are targeted at) people have been more into running shoes like the Air max 1's or Air max 90's or in fact air force 1's. The Jordan thing isint or wasn't should i say as big here as it was in America.

It's another example of globalisation. Because of the internet we're all dressing more like each other. We all listen to the same music videos, we look at the same blogs(hyperbeast) I think this is sad because we're loosing our individuality.

      • GabztotheMabs May 17, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Yeah definetely: because we are exploited to new things on a constant basis it's becoming more and more difficult to find something that lasts, as people can "move onto the next one" within such a small matter of time.

In my opinion America has always been the key influencer in this country and how we style ourselves, especially in the street market. I think we're at such a weird stage right now, people are more than desperate than ever to jump on the new thing and be able to brand themselves as "cool," with the following of Odd Future and thier growth being a key example. A couple of weeks ago, if you wanted to be perceived as cool, you had to idolise Odd Future, hence the constant wall posts from people dickriding them.

I would even say that American influence has grown over the past directly because of sites like hypebeast and music blogs like 2dopeboyz as well as youtube being open to us all. People always want to emulate the Americans, yet now it is easier than ever.

But as a simple outlook, i think we can relate it to the return of old school, recently even in the US there has been a new Jordan following following the likes of Wiz, Curren$y and other popular artists endorsing them. The likes of snapbacks and other items of clothing from the era further emphasises this idea, if you want to talk about the Jordan fad, what about the snapback fad?!

lol your opening up a whole can of worms here, we all just need to wear what we want to be honest , life is too short.
