Brief History of Grime Music
‘Grime’ is a musical genre originating from east London , it derives from UK Garage music and is influenced by rap music/drum and base and dancehall. Pioneers of the genre include Pay as you go crew (Wiley), So solid crew and Heartless crew. To this day the only true Grime song to reach number 1 in the charts is So solids crews ’21 seconds’. However, due to their negative associations with gun violence So solid’s image was fatally tarnished which then had a negative on the Genre as a whole. The free dictionary defines grime as
“dirt, soot, or filth, esp when thickly accumulated or ingrained”,
Negativity! With that, and the fact that only a small amount of people support the genre, the scene is dwindling. No wonder Grime Artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy and Wiley (all in Roll deep or once was) have departed from the typical Grime sound and moved to a more commercial dance/electro pop/dub step/funky house sound.
However, there is one guy, one guy who refuses to bend to the will of the mainstream, one guy who refuses to jump on the band wagon. I’m talking of course about Tempah T. Not to be confused with Tinie Tempah, Tempah T (also known as Tempz) is known for he’s aggressive spitting(rapping) style. Tempah t is one of the last Grime artist and for this reason ’Next Hype’ it the FLYPRINTS TRACK OF THE WEEK. This track has the same energy as ‘Pow’ and makes me laugh every time i watch it however, due to the dark lyrics I doubt this song will ever achieve the success of 21 seconds.
