1968

As you may  or may not know  October is Black History Month so, we at Flyprints have decided to acknowledge this by making a limited edition design for T-Shirt Tuesday. The t-shirts will depict one of the most memorable moments from black history.

WEEK 3

This week’s T-shirt is entitled  ”1968” .The 1968 Power Salute was a black power protest preformed by African American Olympic athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City. On 16th October 1968 Tommie Smith won the 200 meter race with the Australian in second place and John Carlos in third place. In a show of defiance, they raised their arms up at the awards ceremony as a sign of black power. The two athletes actually received their medals shoeless wearing only black socks as a sign of poverty. Smith wore a black scarf to represent black pride. Carlos had his tracksuit unzipped to represent unity with the American working class and wore beads that represented all those that were killed and lynched. The reason why Carlos is actually raising his right hand is because he actually forgot his gloves at the Olympic Village so took Smith’s left glove. In the aftermath of this event both athletes were actually suspended from the national team.
