Thanks to my friend Charlie this week’s track of the week is ‘The Pledge’ by Jay Electronica.
Wikipedia says:
“Jay Electronica (Je’Ri Allah) is a rapper and producer known for his use of percussionist film soundtracks as a background for his abstract lyrical style, and his associations with Erykah Badu, Just Blaze and Nas. He produced the first track, “Queens Get the Money”, on the 2008 Nas album Untitled. The unconventional nature of much of his music, and the lack of conventional release methods for that music, have since 2007 made him the object of much attention”
When i first heard his music i had to listen to it over and over and over again (i’m slow, i know). ’The pledge’ is a collection of three songs ’Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, ‘Paper thin’ and ‘Voodoo man’. His fast flow and thought provoking content takes Jay out of the box of ”rap” and into the rhelms of respected music. His music has the sprituallty of spoken word , coupled with unorthodox beats(sound track of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind ,looped) Mr Electronica is someone to look out for in 2010.
‘The Pledge’ takes you on a journey , removing his ego from the equation Jay maintains full integrity. “Fuck that, fuck rap this is god-hop kingdom music for the hard rocks” Jay Electronica has made rap cool again.
