HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA (ACTUALLY THE UK)

By far my favourite show right now is “How to make it in America” ( I know Jeff, you told me about this show a while back), It’s follows the journey of two young guys Ben Epstein (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam Calderon (Victor Rasuk) who try to succeed in the fashion world and have to ‘hustle’ their way to the top. What really attracts me to this show is how accurately it reflects the lives of us ’20-somethings’ trying to make something of our selves.

So how do you make it in the UK….honestly I don’t know I’m no expert, I’m not made however, there are a few things from I’ve observed from watching and I believe they are important ingredients to success.

1. Creativity- In the Show Ben is a talented creative type who comes up with the initial ideas. I believe in order to be successful you have to bring something new to the table. Don’t get me wrong you don’t have to recreate the wheel, you just have to put some ‘dope’ rims on it.

2. Tenacity – Cam is the “balls” behind the operation, he often makes uncomfortable introductions, asks for things, is pushy and doesn’t taking no for an answer. You need someone on your team who has the strength of character to do the jobs you hate.

3. Going with the flow- In the show the duo initially tried to create a denim line however ,when they presented the sample to a Japanese buyer he wasn’t impressed however, he liked a T-shirts Ben had created years before and made an order for 300. Consequently you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Just be open to it.

4. Taking risks

Conclusion

In the show the duo get knocked back quite a few times and when all seems lost suddenly a life line appears. Now, if I wasn’t running a business I would have thought that this was typical Hollywood fairy tale however, there have been several situations where all has seemed lost and yet something did popped up, call it luck or divine intervention but fortune really does favour the brave.
