Spectrum is defined as ” a broad range of related objects or values or qualities or ideas or activities”. These guys really personify this word. Not only do I like some of their pieces, I also want them to succeed. You know what that means? That means that they have managed to create an emotional connection with me and I really believe in what they are doing. Check out the interview, Check out their mixtape and Check out their site.

Hi how are you?

Spectrumldn: We’re just currently enjoying a typical London summer – thunder, lightning and rain, you know how it is.

So tell me a bit about yourself?

Spectrumldn: We’re just five kids from North London with a keen interest in fashion, music and all of the arts. We share common interests, however we are all different and have our own unique tastes.

What is Spectrumldn?

Spectrumldn: Good question, we began around a year ago as a small clothing brand, just designing and printing in our locality, however as time progressed and as our name began to spread through word-of-mouth, we diversified into designing logos and websites and photography.

How did you come up with the name Spectrumldn?

Spectrumldn: Cyan Chris, the brainchild of SpectrumLDN thought the name up. He wanted a name that would not limit us in anything we do or plan to do, the word ‘Spectrum’ represents this perfectly as it is all encompassing.

What first motivated you to create your brand?

Spectrumldn: We were all individually beginning to design prints and Cyan Chris and I (Desert Red Dan) had talked for a while about starting our own line. As brothers we both share a great passion for clothing and fashion. All of these factors led us to create the brand and bring together all of our different skills.

Who is part of the Spectrumldn team and what does each person bring to the table?

Spectrumldn: SpectrumLDN consists of firstly Cyan Chris, the creator of our brand. The remaining members are Desert Red Dan, Navy Blue Nate, Royal Blue Rich and Apple Green Andre. Being brothers Cyan Chris and I share many of the same characteristics and are both followers of many fashion blogs, I’d personally say we are responsible for the creative direction of our brand, for example choosing which new lines should be released and taking care of the selection of garments to print on. Navy Blue Nate, Royal Blue Rich and Apple Green Andre are three of the most talented young designers around, these guys can bring ideas to life in an instant. Navy Blue is definitely the most daring, he always wants to take our brand to the next level with his ideas. Royal Blue Rich is the calming influence amongst us and a true technical genius. Finally, Apple Green Andre, he has a great eye for detail and his critique continuously helps us to improve in all aspects.

I really like your Spectrumldn sweat shirt with the Wayfarers. How did you come up with the concept?

Spectrumldn: This design came about when we needed to create our first print for SpectrumLDN. We broke down the word Spectrum, then we were left with ‘Spec’, we ran with this and created a design with a pair of ‘Specs’. The Wayfarers are a classic image and we instantly thought it worked.

On your website it says “Remembering where we come from is important to our designs as we draw influence….”  Where do you come from and how does it influence your designs”?

Spectrumldn: We are all proud Londoners, it is home to us. For us, London is the epicentre of fashion, music and culture. London can influence our designs in many ways, whether it is incorporating shapes we’ve seen while walking down Carnaby Street or using colours we’ve seen strolling through Camden Lock, London is always unconsciously inspiring us.

Your logo is very classic and elegant what was the thought process behind the logo?

Spectrumldn: We wanted something that had a vintage feeling to it. In today’s society there are so many images that just come and go. The Wayfarer glasses are a classic creation which has remained relevant for so many years, we hope our brand follows in the same footsteps by remaining relevant for years to come.

How does music play a part in your brand?

Spectrumldn: Since all of us in SpectrumLDN have some family tie, we can all say we were raised listening to the same sort of music. Music is not only a great form of expression but it also influences your mood, when designing we have music playing, it has become the norm for music to assist us through the sometimes difficult designing process. Not many people know this but Navy Blue Nate is a DJ in his spare time, he compiled our SpectrumLDN mixtape. You can tell how important music is to us just by visiting our blog.

SPECTRUM MIXTAPE

If Spectrumldn had to be a cat or dog what would it be and why?

Spectrumldn: I think that SpectrumLDN would be a dog because we have the drive and tenacity that leads us to succeed in our field. SpectrumLDN also share the likeness with a dog in the sense that once we have something that we believe in we find it hard to let go which is great for the brand because we can expand on a small idea and create something great.

Have you done any collaborations if not are you planning to?

Spectrumldn: At this moment in time we have not collaborated with any other brands, however we do have some collaborations in the pipeline, so just watch this space.

What’s been the biggest learning curve for you and the Spectrumldn team?

Spectrumldn: The biggest learning curve we have encountered is to just have fun, the brand started out as a hobby and we’d like to keep fun as the paramount factor and not take it too seriously otherwise it could become a chore which is something no one involved with brand wants to see.

What can people expect from Spectrumldn in the near future?

Spectrumldn: People can expect to see new lines from us in the very near future, they should also be prepared to see us diversify our brand, just follow our blog and you’ll see what we mean. We’ve got great plans for Autumn/Winter 2010 so keep your eyes peeled. We just want people to get involved and follow our movement, the journey has been amazing so far.

Where can people buy your stuff?

Spectrumldn: People can buy our clothes at www.spectrumldn.com. Visit our blog www.spectrumldn.wordpress.com for offers and prizes.

Thank you for your time
