Ed Ruscha

I thought it was only right to start with my current favourite artist, Ed Ruscha, a 73 year old Pop Artist.
For me, pop art is probably the most important and exciting development in the Art world’s history, because it effectively stuck two fingers up to the establishment and allowed anyone to view and enjoy art.

I first saw Ed’s work about a year ago when I was in New York, it was a piece called ‘lion in oil’ – at first the caption doesn’t make any sense – especially considering that the background to the work is a mountain range. However, when you look again you notice that the mountain is actually a mirror image of itself down the middle – which then makes you re-think the text, and allows you to realise that “lion in oil” reads the same forwards as it does backwards.

The thing I really like about Ruscha’s artwork is that he created his own typeface which gives all of his pieces an instant recognisability. Its like if you see a can of Coke – you know thats coke because it says ‘Coke’ in the Coke font, but if you look at Diet Coke – it says “Diet” in the Coke font – but you still have the Visual Association with the Coca Cola Corporation

One of the most interesting things I’ve learn about Ed Ruscha was from a video interview with him and Anthony Kiedis
In the interview he says ‘the hollywood sign acted as a weathervane for me for many years’ – When you think about it, this is probably because he can use it as one of the few still-lifes (painting a physical, still object) which is appropriate to his work, and it definitely shows
